This Enhancing Diabetes Care in Professional Practice Short Course is accredited by the University of Hertfordshire and is taught at Level 6/Degree level.

This multi-professional course focuses upon the assessment and management of the individual with, or at risk of developing, diabetes and its precursor, metabolic syndrome. It will focus on the prevention, recognition and management of metabolic syndrome and diabetes.

Importance is placed on a patient centred approach, the health needs of the individual, health promotion and self-empowerment, whilst acknowledging the professional, political and social climate within which services are provided.

On completion of the course, successful learners will be able to suggest, initiate and vary treatment in response to individual needs. They will demonstrate sound knowledge of the literature relevant to diabetes and metabolic syndrome in relation to cardiovascular complications and an insight into the strategic approaches to delivery of care, to empower them to participate effectively in managing patients with or at risk of developing diabetes.

Diabetes Improving Glycaemic Control Level 7 module

Glycaemic control is central to managing diabetes and reducing the risk of complications for many people. This Diabetes Improving Glycaemic Control Level 7 module contributes to the development of knowledge and understanding of the evidence to underpin clinical decisions and practice in assuring effective glycaemic control.

There is an emphasis on the research and evidence base; participants are encouraged to compare and contrast their findings with national and local guidelines. They will have the opportunity to engage in live webinars to discuss optimal ways of delivering personalised care when supporting the management of glycaemic control. Learning and development will be facilitated through a blend of eLearning units, interactive webinars and masterclasses led by thought leaders in the evolving field of glycaemic control, along with self-directed study. They also have the opportunity to discuss and explore best practice through interactive webinars; focusing on to how to deliver personalised care while reducing cardiovascular risk in people with diabetes. Learning and development is facilitated through a blend of formal presentations, webinars and masterclasses combined with self-directed study. Clinical case studies and personal reflection will form the basis for dialogue and discussion.

Glycaemic control is usually the key issue addressed in practice. However, evidence suggests that cardiovascular complications are reduced through a multifactorial approach which addresses blood pressure, lipid management and lifestyle issues. In some people with diabetes, these interventions have a greater impact on cardiovascular risk than glycaemic control. This module encourages evidence-based analysis and discussion along with a synthesis of different approaches to managing risk in diabetes, which potentially go beyond the guidelines.
