Treating sprains and strains with topical diclofenac

Course description:

Sprains and strains are the most common musculoskeletal injuries among physically active people.1 This module summarises the management of sprains and strains by following the PRICE (protection, rest, ice, compression, elevation) principle, which reduces swelling and aids healing. NICE recommends paracetamol or a topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) as the first-line analgesic for sprains and strains. The module focuses on diclofenac, which is one of the most widely studied topical NSAIDs for musculoskeletal diseases.

After studying this module, you should:

  • Be familiar with the differences between sprains and strains
  • Be able to counsel patients about the self-management of sprains and strains, and when and which patients to refer
  • Understand the mechanism of action of NSAIDs
  • Appreciate the role and efficacy of topical NSAIDs in the management of sprains and strains
