Non-nutritive sucking

Course description:

Preterm babies initially lack the coordinated sucking skills required to feed. Use of a soother (dummy) may help them to develop these skills, as well as provide comfort. This free CPD module explains non-nutritive sucking and reviews the evidence supporting its use in preterm and unwell babies.

After studying this module, you should:

  • Understand what non-nutritive sucking is
  • Be able to explain the benefits of non-nutritive sucking for premature or unwell babies
  • Gain confidence discussing the use of soothers with parents
