Measuring body temperatures in babies and young children

Course description:

Traditionally, body temperature has been taken by the oral route in older children and adults, while the rectal route has been used for babies and young children. However, NICE recommend that these routes are not routinely used in children aged 0–5 years.1 This CPD module explores the options for getting an accurate measurement of a child’s body temperature.

After studying this module, you should:

  • Know which thermometers are suitable for measuring body temperature in infants and young children
  • Understand which readings best reflect a child’s core body temperature
  • Gain confidence in advising parents how to choose and use thermometers correctly.
